Luxury ski spa in Cortina redeveloped to create 'natural ambience'

21 Nov 2019
The Cristallo Resort and Spa in the Northern Italian ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo has undergone a major refurbishment of its 1,600sq m spa.

Located in the Dolomites and owned by the Gualandi family, the other parts of the 74-bed resort was renovated in 2017.

The spa restyle was overseen by architect Alessandro Zarinelli and interior designer Katrin Herden – co-founders of Milan-based architecture and interior design firm Studio MHZ.

Materials used were chosen to echo the resort’s natural surroundings: the stones in the steam bath are local Dolomite rock, while the sauna’s cedar and fir are a direct reference to the materials and scents of the Alpine forests.

Italian supplier Starpool equipped the spa with a selection of its products, including Kneipp path reaction baths, steam bath, wall-mounted icefall and ShowerOne experience showers.

Starpool was also responsible for installing the red-fir sauna, which connects to the outside world through a floor-to-ceiling window allowing natural light to pour in.

Riccardo Turri, Starpool CEO, said: "Contributing to the creation of a new spa is always a highly motivating experience, as well as bringing it to the point where it can express its own wellness concept in ways that are different and original every time."

The spa has a Turkish bath and Relaxarium – a place for guests to unwind with panoramic views of the Dolomites.

Treatments are by Swiss brand Transvital – which specialises in products based on scientific research and derived from Swiss cosmetic traditions.
