Emerald Collection ventures into Africa with tropical retreat and spa on Tanzanian coastline

16 Jan 2023
The Emerald Collection has opened its latest retreat in Zanzibar, Tanzania, inspired by the country’s tropical landscape and cultural heritage.

Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa is the latest addition to the luxury hospitality group’s all-inclusive portfolio and its first property on the African continent.

Situated within 10 hectares of land sloping down towards the sea, Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa has direct access to azure waters and is surrounded by an oval reef classified as a precious marine conservation area.

Wellness is an intrinsic part of each Emerald property and the new Zanzibar location is no exception with its 5,000sq m wellness area. This includes a signature Emerald Spa where guests – both adults and kids alike – can receive a range of Thai and Balinese treatments.

In an ode to the resort’s setting, the spa menu is supplied by Healing Earth, the premium African spa brand conceived by spa industry figure Elisabeth Brandt.

The treatment line-up aims to cater to a wide range of wellness goals and also incorporates yoga classes, hair services and nail treatments in addition to traditional spa healing rituals.

Spa facilities include a steamroom, sauna, assortment of pools, relaxation space and a retail area, as well as 10 treatment rooms (eight for couples and two specialist Ayurveda rooms).

The wellness offering also includes gardens and a spacious Sports Centre with tennis and padel courts and an indoor gym equipped with professional Technogym equipment.

“We’re thrilled by the arrival of Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa – it’s an essential project for The Emerald Collection, in which we have invested tens of millions of euros to build a new resort in line with the standards of excellence of the brand,” comments Aldo Scarapicchia, partner and managing director of The Emerald Collection.

“The property offers 250 suites across seven different categories, and is the ideal starting point for guests looking to discover an incredible natural coral reef, just as beautiful as that of the Maldives, and the natural park on Mnemba Island.”

Additional leisure offerings include four globally-inspired restaurants, four bars, and a Gelateria, as well as access to unlimited non-motorised water sports activities, a diving centre and a kids’ club.

The new five-star resort in Tanzania joins Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa (opened 2019) and the new Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa (opened October 2022), which are also affiliates of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The Emerald Collection is an Italian company which develops, owns and manages luxury resorts in East Africa, the Maldives and the Caribbean.
